Katharina Bosse photographed by Sibylle Fendt

Katharina Bosse works on gender and biography based longterm projects through the use of portraiture, architecture and experimental photography. She uses analog darkroom photography as well as digital collages and enjoys collaborations with other artists. “A Portrait of the Artist as a young Mother” on art and motherhood was published in 2011, and “Thingstätten” on the problematic heritage of open-air theaters from the Nazi era in 2020 (2nd ed 2021).

Katharina Bosse was born in Turku, Finland in 1968 and grew up in Montreal, Canada and Kirchzarten, Germany. After living in New York from the mid-90s for almost a decade, she moved back to Germany in 2003, making art, raising children and teaching as professor for photography in Bielefeld, Germany. Her work is in the collections of the MoMA and Maison Européenne de la Photographie, and has been published by magazines including The New Yorker, Spin, Geo, Der Spiegel and the New York Times Magazine.

Katharina Bosse is actively working on creating more visibility for female identifying photographers through curating and publishing. She is a member of femxphotographers.org and runs the curatorial programme at the the project gallery “Elsa” in Bielefeld; Germany.
